The outline of this pendant is a teardrop. An oval sapphire sits inside a diamond frame that narrows to a point at the top and runs straight on into the bail, so the stones and the hanging point read as one continuous line rather than as a head with a loop stuck on it. At 23 by 11 millimeters the piece is tall and narrow, which is why it hangs as a drop instead of sitting like a medallion.
The sapphire is dark and saturated, and the white gold around it stays cold, so the contrast between the two is about as sharp as it gets. Diamonds carry the whole way up the taper, keeping light on the pendant from the chain down.
