Each earring starts with an oval tanzanite cabochon at the post, framed in pavé, and drops to something much larger: a broad oval disc of pale blue chalcedony, inlaid in segments and divided by pavé set lines that radiate out from a second tanzanite cabochon at the middle, with more pavé following the entire outer rim.
The tanzanite surfaces are matte and lightly granular rather than polished, which holds the blue violet as a solid block of color against the translucency of the chalcedony surrounding it. At 1.75 by 1 inches this is a large pair, and 41 carats across the three materials gives them the weight to match. The disc swings from the top stone and covers most of the lower ear. The chalcedony inlay was cut for this pair alone and has not been made again.
