All Gemstones are Natural in Origin
Twelve oval blue zircons open like petals around a larger oval center, thirteen stones and 30.53 carats massed into a single flower that covers the finger. A fine halo of round diamonds circles the center stone, a thin white seam that sets the deeper blue of the middle apart from the paler blue around it.
Zircon is the most misread name in jewelry, so it is worth being plain: this is natural zircon, a gemstone formed in the earth, with no relation to cubic zirconia, the lab imitation that borrowed part of its name. It is also the oldest mineral ever dated on Earth; zircon crystals from Western Australia have been measured at 4.4 billion years.
The reason jewelers love blue zircon is visible in the photograph: a high refractive brightness that throws white fire out of a pale sea blue, so the whole cluster flickers rather than glows. The white gold is worked into slim claws with an open gallery, letting light in from behind the petals. Worn, it reads as a statement cocktail ring from across a room and as a flower up close.
Zircon is a December birthstone, and thirty carats of it makes an unambiguous one. It was made once, in this arrangement, and it will not be made again.
