A cushion cut sapphire, dark enough to read almost midnight, is held in four yellow gold claws at the middle of a squared band. Each shoulder is then worked in two stages: a single round diamond bezel set right beside the stone, and behind it a short channel of smaller rounds running out along the top of the band.
Yellow gold changes what the blue does. Against warm metal the sapphire looks denser than it would in white, and the two bezel rims put a bright point immediately either side of it. At a size 7 the flat band and squared profile keep the ring compact in spite of 2.76 carats of center stone.
