The whole earring is a spider. Eight gold plated legs bend and splay out from the body, some reaching up and some curling back under, so the figure sits on the lobe as though caught mid step rather than pinned flat.
The body is a pear cut blue sapphire held point down by prongs at its shoulders and tip, dark enough that it reads almost black until light gets behind it, and the head above it is a single round black spinel. Yellow metal around a stone this dark keeps the outline of the figure legible instead of letting it close up into a shadow.
Blue sapphire accounts for 0.28 carats and black spinel for 0.06, 0.34 carats in total, in gold plated sterling silver at 11 by 9 mm. That is a wide stud for a lobe, sized so the spider is recognizable from across a room and not only at conversation distance.
