The amethyst sets the whole architecture of the ring, a broad purple stone with a wide flat table held at the corners by gold claws and lifted on a pierced gallery you can see straight through from the side. The purple runs dense at the table and deepens toward violet where the shoulder facets fall into shadow.
The diamonds are not scattered around the stone. They sit in one small square panel on each shoulder, flush with the top of the band, so the gold climbs to the amethyst in an unbroken line. At size 6 the head takes up most of the width of the finger.
