The cushion cut amethyst here is set high and held by eight prongs, paired at each corner, so the 5.84 carat stone stands clear of the finger and catches light from the sides as well as from above. Its colour runs to a saturated grape purple, with a paler star showing where the pavilion facets meet under the table.
Either shoulder opens into a pierced silver scroll, a leaf shape cut clean through the metal, with diamond accents flush set into the openwork. It is a solitaire in the strict sense, one stone, with the shoulder work supporting it instead of crowding it. Size 8.
