Four aquamarines make each butterfly: two marquise cut upper wings angled outward and two pear cut lower wings turned down and in, so the outline actually opens the way a wing does. The blue green runs pale and even across all four, and each stone is prong set inside a beaded white metal edge that draws the wing shape around it.
Above the wings a pair of curled openwork antennae close the figure, and the whole thing hangs from a rhodium plated leverback. At 30 by 10 millimeters the butterfly stays small and suggestive rather than literal. Eight aquamarines, 1.74 carats across the pair.
