Shown on the ear, the stone is a round brilliant of 7 millimeters, held in four slim yellow gold claws that bring it close against the lobe. The crown is fully faceted and the facet junctions pick up light as sharp white points across the black body, so the stud flashes and breaks up rather than reading as a flat dark disc.
At 3.45 carats for the pair each stone covers most of the lobe, and from a few feet away the gold shows only as four small marks at the compass points of a dark circle. Black against warm yellow gold is a harder contrast than a colorless stone of the same diameter would give, graphic at the edges and lively in the middle.
