These are heart-cut studs, not the round or oval shape the weight alone would suggest. Each black sapphire is held by three yellow gold prongs, two hooked over the shoulders of the heart and one at the point, so the outline stays legible from the front and the cleft at the top is left completely open. At the ear the shape registers before the color does.
Black sapphire runs to 0.68 carats for the pair. A dark stone in yellow gold gives the highest contrast available in a stud: the metal supplies all the brightness and the stone supplies the depth, which is a different effect from a black stone in white metal, where the two compete.
