An oval blue sapphire sits at the head of this ring in four slim claws, its blue kept cool by the 18K white gold that carries it. The shoulders do the interesting work: on each side the band steps up toward the stone in two tapering rows of small round diamonds, so the ring widens gradually into the center instead of arriving there abruptly.
Worn, the head reads a little broader than the finger and holds a clean horizontal line across it. The pavé work throws light along the sides while the sapphire keeps the color to itself, and at size 7 US the shank sits flush without riding.
