One cushion cut blue topaz of better than four carats takes up the whole head, held by four corner prongs over an open basket, so light passes through the stone and comes back out of the table rather than stopping underneath it. The blue is the bright, clear sky end of the range rather than the deep steel end.
Small white topaz run in a single row down each shoulder of a narrow band, which keeps the shank slim and lets the center stand well above it. Sterling silver holds the whole ring cool in tone, with nothing pulling warmth into the blue. At size 7 it wears as a solitaire with a little extra light at the sides.
