The butterfly is drawn rather than filled: white metal scrollwork outlines both pairs of wings and the antennae curl back over the top edge, leaving open air between the stones. Ten violet tanzanites take the outer wing, marquise and pear cuts laid along the sweep of each upper wing with one round stone in each lower wing, while eight Swiss blue topazes run inward toward the body in ovals, marquise and small rounds.
That gradient from violet at the wing tips to bright cyan at the thorax is what makes the insect read at a glance, and the ridged, grooved body between the wings gives the piece a spine. It sits wide and low on the hand for size 6 US, the pierced gallery keeping the weight down despite the span.
