The garnets are heart cut, one to each earring, and dark enough that their facets read as broad planes of red rather than quick flashes. Two staggered rows of white topaz follow the outline of each heart, around the lobes, into the cleft and down to the point, so the frame repeats the shape rather than rounding it away.
The metal is worked two ways. White through the halo and the seats, with the prongs at the shoulders and at the point picked out in yellow gold, three small warm marks against an otherwise cool face. At 12 by 11 millimeters each earring is compact but reads clearly, the bright double border making the red look darker still.
