An emerald cut iolite of 3.40 carats fills the head of this ring, violet blue through the table and going darker toward the corners, secured by four claws. The halo follows the clipped octagon of the cut rather than a plain rectangle, its round diamonds stepping neatly around each corner so the frame echoes the stone's outline. Two rows of pavé carry on down both shoulders before the 14K white gold band runs plain to the finger.
White gold is the right foil for iolite: it stays neutral and lets the violet sit where it falls instead of tinting it. The face is broad enough to cover most of the width of the finger, which puts this nearer a cocktail ring than a solitaire, and the 0.28 carats of diamond is spread thin enough to outline the color without competing with it. Sized at 7 US.
