Each butterfly is built from four London blue topaz: two marquise cuts angled upward for the forewings, two pears set below for the hindwings, and a polished silver bead at the body where the four meet. A beaded frame in white metal traces the entire wing outline and a pair of curled antennae rises above the head, so the silhouette registers as a butterfly well before the color does.
The blue is deep and cool, closer to steel than to sky, and rhodium plated sterling silver holds it there instead of warming it. At 29 by 10 millimeters the pair covers the lobe and a little below, hanging from lever backs that keep the wings square to the face.
