Eight square cut pink sapphires are set in two staggered rows, each stone turned on point and sharing its corners with its neighbours, so the top edge of the ring rises and falls in a zig zag rather than running straight. The settings are squared to the stones and leave the pink almost unbroken across the top. The zig zag is doing the work a centre stone would normally do, and it is what gives the piece its character.
