Marquise cut rubies build the wings of this butterfly, nine to each upper wing in three staggered rows and five to each lower wing, close to thirty stones in all. The color is a deep purplish red, and packed this tightly the wings read as solid color from a step away, with white metal showing only at the prong tips.
The body is polished silver, tapering to a point, with two fine curling antennae above it. The 3.1 carats quoted for the piece is spread across all of those small marquise stones rather than gathered into one, which is what lets the wings be drawn in this shape at all. A cable chain threads behind the upper wings so the butterfly sits flat at the neck.
