The topaz here does not surround the ruby, it flanks it. Two stacked rows of step cut white topaz run down each shoulder, bar set in white metal, and together they build the band out into a wide flat block on either side of the center. The oval ruby sits between them in four yellow prongs, raised just proud of the topaz.
The whole thing reads two tone: bright white shoulders with warm gold rails along the upper and lower edges of the band, and a saturated red between them. At just over five carats the ring has the squared, substantial profile of a signet more than a solitaire, and at a size 7 it fills the span between the knuckles.
