The halo on these studs does not touch the ruby. Each oval stone is held clear by four claws, then a polished band of white gold opens around it before the diamonds begin, so the pave ring floats at the outer edge of the earring with a clean channel of metal between it and the red.
Twenty-eight diamonds to a side hold that outer ring, fifty-six across the pair, and the gap is what makes them work: the light collects at the rim and leaves the middle of the earring to the color. Thirteen by eleven millimeters, sitting flat and reading as a bright oval outline from any distance.
