A square cut swiss blue topaz of 5.66 carats is held at the waist of an openwork sterling silver frame, and the frame is much the larger part of the design: scrolled wire curling outward at the shoulders and drawing down to a point below the stone, 56 by 37 millimetres in all.
The silver is left bright and unset, so the only colour anywhere in the piece is the single block of blue at its centre. The topaz is cut with a flat table and steps running parallel to its edges, which holds the colour even across the face rather than breaking it into flashes.
