Brazil, and Minas Gerais in particular, is the great topaz source, with important deposits also in Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Russia, Mexico, and the United States. In its most common natural state topaz is colorless or very pale, and that colorless material is the raw stock behind most of the blue topaz you see, which we will come to plainly below.
The colors of topaz, and what to look for
Topaz covers more ground than most buyers expect. The names matter, because they describe real, consistent differences you can shop by.
- Sky blue is the lightest of the blues, soft and pale, close to the color of aquamarine. It reads fresh and quiet.
- Swiss blue is the vivid one: bright, saturated, almost electric. It is the blue most people picture when they hear blue topaz.
- London blue is the deepest, a dark steely blue with a slight grey or green undertone. It reads rich and moody rather than bright, and it is the blue that looks most expensive in yellow gold.
- Imperial topaz, sometimes called precious topaz, runs from peach and sherry through pinkish orange. This is the rare and genuinely collectible topaz, historically associated with Ouro Preto in Brazil.
- Golden and yellow topaz sits between warm honey and pale champagne, and pairs naturally with yellow metals.
- Pink topaz is scarce in nature and correspondingly prized.
- White or colorless topaz is the base material, bright and crisp, and an honest alternative to a white stone when you want scale.
- Mystic topaz shows a rainbow iridescence across the surface. That effect comes from a thin applied coating rather than from the stone itself, which is worth knowing before you buy.
Within any of these, look for even color across the stone and a lively cut. Because topaz is so often clean to the eye, cut quality does more visible work here than clarity does.
Where the blue comes from, stated plainly
Natural blue topaz does occur, but it is rare and usually very pale. Essentially all of the vivid blue topaz on the market, ours included, begins as natural colorless topaz that is irradiated and then heated to develop a stable blue. Sky, Swiss, and London blue are all produced this way, at different intensities.
We would rather say that clearly than let you assume otherwise. The stone is natural and earth-mined: it grew in the ground, and nothing about it is synthetic or lab-created. What the treatment does is bring out a color the material is capable of holding. The result is permanent and stable under normal wear, and this process has been standard practice in the gem trade for decades. It is also disclosed, every time, on the appraisal that travels with the piece.
The same honesty applies elsewhere in the family. Mystic topaz gets its iridescence from a surface coating, which is more vulnerable to wear than the stone underneath. One more piece of vocabulary worth clearing up: "smoky topaz" is not topaz at all. It is smoky quartz, sold under a borrowed name. Real topaz is a different mineral entirely, and harder.
Is topaz rare?

The exception is real. Fine imperial topaz, natural pink topaz, and large untreated golden material are genuinely scarce and priced accordingly. Those pieces are collector territory.
For everything else, the honest case for topaz is not rarity, it is value. Topaz is where you buy size, clarity, and brilliance rather than scarcity. A large, clean, beautifully cut blue topaz costs a fraction of what a comparable sapphire would, and it will draw more attention across a room than a small stone of a rarer species. How topaz wears
Topaz measures 8 on the Mohs hardness scale. That puts it above quartz, above most colored gemstones, and just under sapphire and ruby at 9. In practical terms it resists scratching very well and will stay bright through years of ordinary wear.
There is one characteristic to respect. Topaz has what gemologists call perfect basal cleavage, meaning there is a single plane along which a sharp, well-placed blow can split the crystal. This does not make topaz delicate, and it is not a reason to avoid it. It simply means topaz rewards a little common sense. Earrings and pendants, which rarely take direct impact, wear beautifully every day. Rings are excellent too, and are also the piece most likely to catch a door frame or a countertop, so slip a topaz ring off before the gym, gardening, or anything with real force behind it.
Caring for topaz
Warm water, a drop of mild soap, and a soft brush is all topaz needs, followed by a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: the combination of cleavage and enhanced color makes both a bad idea. Avoid sudden temperature changes for the same reason. Prolonged exposure to strong sunlight and high heat can pale some topaz colors over time, so store pieces out of direct light. And because topaz at 8 is harder than most of what sits next to it, keep it separated in your box so it does not scratch softer stones.
