A lab-grown gemstone, also called laboratory-created or synthetic, is real gemstone material made by people. A lab-grown diamond is carbon crystallized in the same structure as a mined diamond. A lab-grown sapphire is corundum, chemically identical to the sapphire that comes out of the ground. These stones are grown in weeks or months using industrial processes: diamonds under high pressure and high temperature presses (HPHT) or through chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and colored stones by methods like flame fusion, flux growth, and hydrothermal growth. Created gems are not even new. Flame-fusion ruby has existed since the early 1900s. What is new is the scale, especially for diamonds, where production capacity has grown enormously in the past decade.
One distinction worth keeping sharp: lab-grown stones are not the same thing as simulants. Cubic zirconia and moissanite imitate the look of diamond but are entirely different materials. A lab-grown diamond is diamond. It is not a fake. It is simply not rare.

A natural gemstone formed in the earth, in most cases over millions of years, under conditions of heat, pressure, and chemistry that can never be exactly repeated. It was found, mined, cut, and polished, but no one manufactured it. That history leaves fingerprints: the tiny inclusions inside a natural stone are a record of its formation, and gemologists read them the way foresters read tree rings. No two natural stones are ever identical, which is why a fine natural gem has a personality a production run cannot have. And the supply is finite. A well-made lab-grown stone is the same material as its natural counterpart, so separating them reliably takes gemological laboratory instruments that read growth patterns, trace elements, and fluorescence. This is precisely why documentation matters more than ever. In the United States, the FTC requires sellers to disclose clearly when a stone is laboratory-grown, and reputable sellers state origin plainly on every listing. The honest case for lab-grown
We would rather say this plainly than pretend otherwise: lab-grown stones deliver a bigger, cleaner-looking stone for less money. Production is consistent, supply is steady, and for a buyer who wants the look alone, with no interest in where the stone came from or what it will mean in twenty years, a created stone does the job. That is a legitimate choice, and a seller who sneers at it is not being straight with you.

What separates an honest seller from the rest is disclosure: we note treatments in the product listing when they apply, and the working assumption in the trade is that a stone may be enhanced unless documentation states otherwise. A seller who discusses treatments openly is a seller you can trust on everything else.
