Rather than a closed halo, the diamonds run as two interlocking loops that spiral around the oval sapphire and cross above and below it. The frame is open, so the sapphire stays visible through the gaps and the pendant catches light from behind as well as in front. It is a more restless setting than a plain halo and it suits a stone this dark, which needs movement around it to read as blue rather than black.
