The Swiss blue topaz is a long step cut, four and a half carats of it, and it hangs in the open middle of a silver frame rather than sitting on a solid back. Four corners hold it, each tipped with a white topaz so small it registers as a point of light rather than a stone.
Above and below, the frame arches into scrolled openwork that finishes the rectangle. Because the setting is open front to back, light passes straight through the blue instead of bouncing off metal behind it. Sterling silver, 42 by 14 millimeters, long and narrow at the neck.
